How dating apps accidentally solved B2B's biggest problem

You're in a client call. Someone asks a question you didn't prep for. Your brain does that thing where it just... stops.
Like someone yanked the cable mid-thought, and now you're sitting there, camera on, mouth slightly open, desperately scrambling for anything that doesn't sound stupid.
In that moment, you're convinced everyone sees it.
The blank. The panic. The fact that you're not one of those people who just knows what to say.
Let us break it for you: those people don't exist.

THE QUIET PANIC WE DON’T DISCUSS

There’s that moment in creative reviews: the client sees the work, makes that face, and you know they haven’t landed on feedback yet.
Everyone turns to the creative director. Waiting.
They want an instant read. Address the concern that hasn't been voiced. Pivot before it gets awkward. The unspoken expectation: you should know.
What if you don't?
What if your brain needs seven seconds to process, but the room only gave you two?
We mostly accept that some people "have it" and some don't. Like spontaneity is a genetic lottery. You either won or you're faking it till someone notices.
That's the scam we've all bought.
👉 You know Curb Your Enthusiasm? That show that feels so perfectly, painfully improvised, you can practically see the actors breaking?
They shoot 30 hours of footage for a 30-minute episode.
Larry David doesn't write dialogue. He shares scene outlines. Seven to eight takes per scene. Different angles. Different tones. Different ways into the same joke. Editors carve out the 30 minutes that feel the most natural.
So when Jeff Garlin lands a perfect one-liner, you're not watching raw genius.
You're watching the result of practiced spontaneity. They've trained themselves to find the funny in the moment.
👉 A junior designer gets asked for feedback in a meeting. Freezes. They have opinions. Just not the reflex to pull them out under pressure.
The room doesn't read it that way. They hear: "no strong POV" or "not confident enough."
Worse? The person asking doesn't realize they're demanding a skill the designer hasn't built. The designer doesn't realize it's okay to not have it yet.
Spontaneity is a skill. We've just agreed to pretend it's not.

**WHY DO WE GATEKEEP IT? **

Spontaneity is one of the last things we can still call "talent."
We've democratized everything else. Learn to code. Learn to design. YouTube tutorials for all of it. But quick thinking? That still feels like sorcery.
We call it "sharp instincts." Learnable, practiceable, boringly buildable, would take away its shine.
If everyone knew it was about exposure, it wouldn’t be impressive.
Nobody wants the thing that makes them look effortlessly clever to be the result of awkward fumbling.
It is homework. The sooner you treat it that way, the sooner you stop panicking when your brain buffers in a meeting.
You're going to say dumb shit. Multiple times. Your brain will refuse to cooperate, and you'll sit there, visibly loading, while everyone waits.
That's not failure. That's training.
Spontaneity doesn’t mean never freezing. It means freezing less often.
Building enough reference points that when someone puts you on the spot, your brain grabs something, even if it's imperfect, and keeps the ball moving.
That's the skill. Learning to stay in the game long enough to find your footing.
Nobody's born with it. You just build it. 🥝
