How dating apps accidentally solved B2B's biggest problem

Ever finished a show and realized you couldn’t recall half of what happened?
That’s not bad memory. That’s great design.
Streaming platforms are built to be background noise, not storytelling. You think you’re bingeing. You’re actually being behaviorally managed.
That new series you’ve got “on” while replying to DMs? The one where you missed three plot twists because you were scrolling Instagram? That’s not on you. It's on them.
They’ve cracked the attention code, and it’s costing you more than you think.

ENGAGED VIEWERS ARE EXPENSIVE VIEWERS

When you’re locked in, demanding better writing, tighter plotlines, layered characters - you’re a problem.
So they solved it.
Directors are being briefed to make “second-screen friendly” content. Translation? Make it boring enough to scroll through, but not boring enough to switch off.
Your favourite show isn’t competing for your attention. It’s competing for your background noise tolerance.

THE BEAUTIFUL LIE OF CHOICE

Remember when Netflix meant “pay once, watch everything”?
Now you’re paying ₹649 to avoid ads, while someone else pays ₹199 for the same content... with ads.
And both of you are renting films that used to be included.

Each downgrade was sold as an upgrade: More tiers! Flexible pricing! Personalized experiences!
It’s not personalization. It’s partitioning. Tiered streaming has nothing to do with taste and everything to do with tolerance.
Prime Video’s recent ad rollout wasn’t a misstep. It was a masterstroke?
They knew exactly who would grumble and pay, and who would quietly watch with ads.
Frustrated metro users pay extra to remove interruptions (hello, margin boost). Tier-2 and Tier-3 users? Happily watching ads in exchange for affordability.
**Same library. Two revenue streams. **Not bad, Prime Video, not bad.
And while all this is happening?
Everyone’s watching The Traitors. On Prime. Not Netflix. Not Disney+. Prime.
The platform that just pushed ads is also producing the most addictive content. That’s not a coincidence, it's good strategy.

**THE DIRTY SECRET? **

Last month, Netflix’s CEO claimed their platform offers “intellectual” content that challenges viewers. Anurag Kashyap called him out, and in doing so, revealed the whole game.
Netflix makes content that demands full attention. Amazon makes content that forgives distraction. One makes you feel smart. The other makes you feel seen. Both are charging you for identity.
Because let’s be honest your mom has watched more content this year than you have.
And it’s Panchayat, not House of Cards.

YOU’RE NOT PAYING FOR CONTENT. YOU’RE PAYING TO FEEL PREMIUM.

Premium tiers don’t give you better stories. They give you status.
Ad-free streaming isn’t about enjoyment. It’s about not being the kind of person who watches ads.
Apple users already know this game. You pay 30% more to stay in the ecosystem, not for the experience, but for the association.
Streaming platforms took notes. They learned that when value isn’t enough, status sells.

SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR US?

If you’re building anything that relies on sustained attention, ie, Brand content. Product experiences. Campaigns. Newsletters like this one…
You're playing against a system that’s re-trained your audience to expect less, scroll more, and still pay extra.
Entertainment is not the only experience that’s shifting. It’s our expectation of what premium feels like.
The real question is, can content compete with Netflix in the background while your audience does three other things?
Some truths are harder to swallow once you see how perfectly they’ve been packaged.
_That’s why we keep unpeeling. 🥝 _
